Playalinda Beach - looking south

Playalinda ("Pretty Beach") is part of the Canaveral National Seashore on Merritt Island. The drive to it backs up to launch pad 39B for the Space Shuttles. This is probably one of the best kept secrets in Florida. This shot was made near parking area 11. Think about it--summer time, the middle of June and you can visit a beach that has only one or two other people on it as far as the eye can see!

It requires a commitment on your part to get there (and maybe that's why it's not heavily visited). From the intersection of Hwy 1 and Max Brewer Memorial Parkway in Titusville, Florida, you proceed down the parkway for nine miles just to get to the ranger shack to pay the fee. The first parking area is another two and half miles from there. The entire way, you're thinking "they'll never find my body out here..." [grin] But you end up at about 7 miles of beach with 13 nicely separated parking areas. It's a beautiful thing!
