banana hydrant

True story from San Francisco: emergency workers in San Francisco are provided with a fresh, constant supply of bananas that can be used to open and operate hydrants. Here we can see one such tactical banana that had been left behind after last weekend's city-wide earthquake preparedness drills. The bananas can also be used as small, stiff levers for prying open wooden crates, and one end can be lit to provide an impromptu blowtorch. In extreme circumstances they can be eaten, but this is not a suggested use.

As seen on 18th st in the Mission District, San Francisco.
