The Paschal Vigil

The darkened church is illuminated by the brilliance of the Resurrection as the Paschal Candle leads us through the darkness and into the Light. The Gloria is once again sung and the bells are rung. The Church celebrates the new life born from the baptismal waters as we Christians renounce Satan and his works.

This is the night that with a pillar of fire banished the darkness of sin. … This is the night when Christ broke the prison-bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld. —Easter Exultet, 5th Century

THE DRAMA OF HOLY WEEK is the culmination and climax of the Church Year. From Palm Sunday to Easter, the ceremonies of the Sacred Liturgy are carried out with the utmost solemnity and import. Through light, gesture, word, and music we are immersed in the life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Our Lord.

We are pleased to share the very best photos from over 10 years of sacred photography from Chicago’s St. John Cantius Church (www.cantius.org)
