Tagging with OSU friends
Sept. 8, 2012
After finishing a monarch program at the Lake Erie Islands Nature Center on South Bass island, my husband and I joined Jackie Taylor and Katie Hollenbeck of OSU/Stone Lab to tag wild monarchs at the South Bass Island Lighthouse Waystation garden. It was sunny but very windy, the monarchs were tough to catch. We were able to get permission from the owner of a nearby sunflower field to enter her property, and began tagging there instead (less windy, very sunny, protected by tree line). We had a blast, and tagged around 30 monarchs in total before heading to Gibraltar Island for a volunteer appreciation dinner. It had started off a cold, rainy day, but ended up being absolutely gorgeous. We enjoyed exploring Gibraltar island for the first time, and seeing Stone Lab. What a wonderful day meeting new friends!
