A side by side comparison of emacs and notepad++ on the same bit of code (An old school assigment).

 

Emacs has way more features and I love the keyboard shortcuts, but it looks like it is left over from Windows 3.1. Note how Notepad++ colours brackets when I put the cursour on either bracket, not just the first one, the nicer indicators of a long line, and the nice boarders around the window and gradiants on the buttons.

 

In emacs's favour you have much more compressed sext at the same font size, and I'm sure you can customize that if it isn't to your taste.
