At the Pace of Cattle

Down the lane to the marshes

You stroll - distracted by

Hog weed and hedge parsley -

Your large heads nodding

And your slow hooves moving

Down, what seems like, a tunnel in time

Centuries old

With me, in peasant garb

Waving my wooden crook,

Guiding you gently from behind

Tapping your haunches

First this side and then that

As we plod together

Inexorably down the lane

Amid the sweet reek of your breath

Towards the dyke-surrounded

Marsh-meadow

Where the grass is greenest.
