Pakistan in Cambridge: Torn

Explore: 13/08/07. Detail from the sheet covering the grave of Choudhary Rahmat Ali in the city cemetery in Newmarket Road. Rahmat Ali (1897-1951), a law student at Emmanuel College, came up with the acronym "PAKISTAN" and launched a movement -- hence often referred to as the "Cambridge student scheme" -- for the establishment of the country in 1933. Pakistan eventually gained independence on August 14, 1947. Rahmat Ali studied, lived and died in Cambridge. He was the first Pakistani as well as the first Pakistani exile!
