The Cohen family - WW2 in Alexandria, Egypt with some illustrations by Sydney Arrobus.
This set of pictures is devoted to my family life in World War II in Alexandria, Egypt and how we were depicted by our friend, the artist Sydney Arrobus, who was serving in North Africa in the British Army.

My father had first come to Alexandria in 1927 from London, via NY and Constantinople to be a manager at the Ionian Bank - a British Bank. He married my mother who was from Vienna in 1932 in Vienna. We finally departed from Alexandria in Spring 1954. The story is given in the pictures. I have other sites dealing with the schools my brother and I attended.

Sydney Arrobus {the artist] has a number of items at the National Portrait Gallery -see

Sydney was a great personal friend of our family. He was born in Hampstead, London in 1901 and died in Haverstock Hill, Hampstead in 1990.

We first met Sydney when my mother served him tea at the Menorah Club
Alexandria, probably in 1941.

Read about some of Sydney's war memoirs here:

I have added pages on ARROBUS genealogy on Sydney's maternal family the LIPSCHITZ. His maternal grandfather Selig LIPSCHITZ was a picture dealer/framer and fine arts publisher.

I thank my husband, Dr John Male, who has scanned all the pictures for me with great patience.

AND THERE WILL BE MORE TO COME - so watch this space.
