J. B. Briggs (of Briggsville, KY), captain and assistant quartermaster of 4th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry who reportedly said that the 40 colored men in his regiment had gradually armed themselves and some were even better equipped than their white compatriots. According to Briggs, each boasted one or two revolvers and a fine carbine or repeating rifle. Serving with the described unit from Williamson County would have been Daniel McLemore, John Briggs, Ike Norris, Robert Bruce Patton, and Hardin Starnes.
