Body Servant, Reuben Battle obituary 1903

"Uncle Reuben" Battle, Who Went Through War, Dead.

"Uncle Reuben" Battle, a faithful old colored servant of the Battle family, died Friday at the home of John S. Battle. When Mr. Battle was a soldier of the Confederacy "Uncle Reuben" went out to the war with him, and at the battle of Chickamauga, William Gaut, a brother-in-law of Mr. Battle, was missing. "Uncle Reuben" went out on the battlefield and found the missing man who was badly wounded.

The casket of the faithful negro has been covered with flowers by the members of his former master's family, by whom he was greatly respected.
