Pugin's sketches of Northern European Architecture
500 photographs of sketches by the architect and designer Augustus Welby Pugin taken in 1865 by the photographer Stephen Ayling.

This rare collection of original photographs was discovered in the Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham in 2012, the 200th anniversary year of Pugin's birth.

The drawings include cathedrals, ecclesiastical interiors, metalwork, furniture and architectural details. We believe Pugin made these sketches on his travels through Europe, from locations including Nuremberg, Ghent, Antwerp, Bruges, Amiens, Rouen and more.

The original photographs in four albums are available for consultation in the Cadbury Research Library reading room at the University of Birmingham.
