South Yarra, Melbourne

Airlie, 254-260 Domain Rd, South Yarra. c1873.

Coach House and Stables added 1890. Front portico and verandahs added 1924.

For its first 70 years, the 20-room mansion was a family home. The first residents were the clan of David Ogilvy, a colonial solicitor and first president of the Law Institute. Airlie was named after Airlie Castle, the seat of the Ogilvys in Scotland.

The two-storey mansion has grand drawing rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and iron and marble fireplaces, as well as a servants' wing. Leadlight windows depict flowers with gum leaves. The foyer has tessellated tiles and clerestory stained glass windows high above the grand staircase. The upstairs balcony once had panoramic views of Melbourne, now blocked by houses and flats.

Subsequent families - the Halls, Chirnsides (Werribee Park), Harpers and Leonards - left their stamp, including an antique elevator with wood-panel interior.
