Ruth and the Green Book at the Center for the Puppetry Arts - 1/5/2012
The Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta will premiere their newest puppet show, Ruth and the Green Book, on February 7, 2012. Based on the children's book by Atlanta playwright Calvin Alexander Ramsey, the story focuses on young Ruth and her parents' confrontation with explicit racism while driving by car from Chicago to Alabama.

The titular Green Book was a real travelers guide for black motorists, listing a variety of services such as gas stations, housing and restaurants that will safely welcome and serve blacks.

The performance is moving, unflinching, informative and very family friendly. It is a great vehicle for educating young people on a rather grim aspect of our past, where signs reading "Whites Only" were quite common, particularly in the South. And it is timely being shown during Black History month.
