Il nome scientifico Pyracantha deriva dai vocaboli greci "pyr = fuoco" e "àkantha = spina", col significato di "fiamma spinosa", in riferimento sia alla forma piramidale della chioma, simile appunto a una fiamma, sia al vivido color rosso delle bacche.


The scientific name comes from the Greek words Pyracantha "pyr = fire" and "plug àkantha", meaning "prickly heat", in reference both to the pyramidal shape of the crown, similar in fact to a flame, and the vivid red of the berries .
