tofurkey kielbasa!!

Went to the Raleigh Ho Foods at lunch, and I just figured I'd check out the fake meat section ... woo hoo! Tofurkey Kielbasa, Italian sausage and beer brats (beer brats!!). I don't believe they carry these at their Durham store ... at least they weren't there last time I checked. (They don't have spring roll skins, either.)

I'm craving hot dogs and bologna too! (the soy kind, not the meatscraps kind.) I'm really going to have to make a special trip to the far-away grocery store soon.

oh 3.79 eh, how come that tofurky brand is so darn pricey, hey it is just beans for gosh sake

Gotta love the beancurd brandname Smoke & Fire!

    Drool :-|~~~~~~~

bfelice is right. Being veggie but eating "carnivore style" is more expensive. Which is stupid. Hopefully it will change as demand increases !

Smoke & Fire rocks! I'll eat that stuff plain.

what are you gonna do with the spring roll skins?
  • Lisa Bunchofpants 10y

Spring rolls, chotda! They are easy to make and are a great lunch. I don't have a real spring roll recipe--I just use red cabbage, shredded carrots, cucumbers and baby spinach (plus cilantro--the most important ingredient!). It's like a little rolled up salad.

I guess the stuff is so expensive because they know there are lots of vegetarians who, deep down inside are craving brats!

Sorry I flung the craving on you, niffer!

    : )
the cravings have just extended over from the quorn-tastes-like-chicken conversation that we had over in groc's stream. usually I don't buy the fake-meat stuff because it is so darned expensive, but I might just do it tomorrow (fake bacon BLTs are the best!!).

    your spring rolls sound yummy!

sorry to turn this into aunt dotty's recipe klatsch, but do you cook the spring rolls? what are the spring roll skins made of?
  • Jason Brackins 10y

I think the wrappers are made of rice flour. And spring rolls go uncooked. (caveat. Sometimes the stuff inside is cooked first, cooled and then stuck in (There's this place here in memphis that makes incredible fried tofu spring rolls, Mmmmmmm))

Edit: did a little googling. Sometimes the wrappers are dried and you have to rehydrate them. I found a recipe for wrappers that calls for eggs, so vegans should check packages before purchase :)

yummy! for some reason i associated the spring roll search with the fake meat perusal, and i couldn't imagine what you were going for--maybe a vietnamese kielbasa wrap?!
  • Lisa Bunchofpants 10y

My spring roll and fake meat searches are unrelated!

leff is correct, the wrappers are made of rice flour. The ones I get don't have egg in them. They are dried, and I rehydrate them by putting water in a deep plate and soaking them for 1-2 minutes (one at a time--otherwise they could get stuck together!). Then I pick up the wrapper, let the excess water run off for a moment, and lay it flat on another plate. Then I fill it with stuff and roll it up like an egg roll (you tuck in the sides as you roll). Then I stick them in a container, refrigerate and grab some on my way out the door in the morning.

I got the idea from someone else, who was answering my query for good lunch ideas.

can you believe there are people, when I tell them I am a vegitarian, that ask me "well what do you eat?"
I guess I should point them to flickr...
  • Lisa Bunchofpants 10y

So they don't get the answer "Um, like everything BUT meat"? (Heh heh ... butt meat ... heh heh)

The other day I told a co-worker that i had quite eating meat and she said "But you still eat chicken, right?"
  • Russ Sprague 10y

    well and of course pork...
  • Jason Brackins 10y

    and fish...
  • Beth Felice 10y

man, this spring roll wrapper sounds like it could be a portable, edible salad container for lazy people (like me.)
  • Jason Brackins 10y

I like bread for that purpose too. I just had a "salad sandwich" from subway yesterday :)
  • niffer 10y

    mmmmmmmm ~ salad sandwich!!!
with (my preference) italian or parmesean with cracked pepper (it has a name, I'm sure) dressing.
