The Miner's Digs

This abandoned old shack was once the abode of three Chinese miners. Actually, I'm not sure whether they were miners or supported the town of Humbug in some other way. The Chinese were a vital part of the mining culture in California during the 19th century providing services that the typical gnarly miner couldn't do for himself--like doing laundry and making chow mein. The Chinese also tended to be sober and showed up for work. Personally, I'm eternally grateful for the cuisine.

If you view this in black you can just make out the Chinese names on the upper right side of the door.
