#42 Veiled Chameleon

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Reptilia

Order: Squamata

Family: Chamaeleonidae

Genus: Chamaeleo

Species: Chamaeleo calyptratus

Veiled chameleons are a large and beautiful chameleon, making them very popular in the pet trade. They are native to the Arabian Peninsula, but their status as a popular pet has led to them being moved all about. There are multiple established populations in south and southwest Florida.

Welcome to my Flickr 365 Project! I’m calling it my 365 Species Project, because for each day of the year, I will post a photo of a different species of organism. Today is another catchup day. Photo number 41 is late because I was out very late last night surveying for invasive reptiles with the University of Florida. We were mostly looking for pythons, but a quick stop to a potential chameleon site yielded this male veiled chameleon. Invasive reptiles are a huge problem in south Florida, and the problem goes WAY beyond the Burmese python.

***The location of the photo on the map above is purposely low-resolution and not an exact location.
