White-tailed Ptarmigan, Lagopus leucura, 31.75 cm. / 12.5 in. UNCOMMON and local. Alpine tundra, especially where exposed rocks and wet, mossy ground mix. Handheld. Hiked up a steep slope deeply covered with snow. Published by The Cornell Lab of Ornithology in "All About Birds".
