Hovland Rock III

Winter Lake Superior waves wash up the rocky beach near Hovland, MN.

I had a hard time selecting which photo to post from this mornings photo session. I took three different comps of this rock and about 40 different shots from each comp to get various waves. On my first comp, the select was obvious. On this one and one other, I had a difficult time of selecting. I narrowed this one down to three different waves and decided to stick with this one to post. I'm still not sure if this is my favorite comp. The first two were from the other side and the first comp was much more simple.

I used to save all my shots, but over the last year, I force myself to narrow it down to one or two shots at each comp and I delete the rest. I really like this approach because it reflects what I did with slides. When I tossed slides, it meant less labeling and data entry. Now, it just makes my catalog tighter and easier to sort through.

I included the other two comps into the comments below.

I like the horizontal alternate quite a bit.
  • Karen Ramsdale 3y

I too like your first selection with more defined waves. I ALMOST stopped here on my way home from Grand Marais on Friday. All three are wonderful images!
  • Barry 3y

    Excellent image!

  • Maine Trekker 3y

    Very nice shot
  • Jim Teske 3y

The other comps are really nice too! But, I do like this one the best. Good choice.

I like the top one the best Bryan. I delete the other stuff also, I ask myself, would this look good framed and hanging on a wall...this helps me weed out the weaker work.
  • Beth Walsh 3y

Definitely the top one, love the foregrd rocks, beautiful composition.
  • Bryan Hansel 3y

SMR Labs That's actually my personal favorite.
  • Jarkko 3y

    Nice work!

    Wonderful Shots--all of them.
  • The new flickr is very ugly and slow 3y

    Wonderful photo....-_^

Bryan Hansel It has a beautiful flow to it. Everything leads perfectly to the foreboding island. The main one has cooler details -- little things to get lost in -- but not the same "I'm going there" feel. My thoughts, anyway.
  • Emily Anderson 3y

All of the shots are beautiful!!! Love the dreamy feel. It makes winter in MN look a little more do-able than it really is. :)
  • Bryan Hansel 3y

Emily Anderson I love winter in MN.
  • Emily Anderson 3y

I like to look at winter in MN.... I just don't like to feel it. Every time it snows pretty, I am reminded of why I stay. :)
  • Mark Baldwin 3y

Wow, that's a tough choice, Bryan. All three images are certainly worth hanging on to. Hard to pick a favorite, but I do find the verticle comp very compelling. I am also cutting down my image catalog. Makes it much easier to manage.
