The Moon's Halo - Palm 2

    Newer Older

Here in Costa Rica they say that when you can see a ring around the moon at night (called a "luna de agua") it fortells 3 or 4 straight days of slow but steady rain (called a "temporala" I think).

The moon's ring can best be seen HERE

This is beautiful--and so much better than if you had just photographed the moon alone. I feel as if I am there in Costa Rica, peeking up from the base of the trees.

I can't really think of any way to improve the technical side on this shot - the wide angle's managed to get all the halo in, it's stable enough and you're going to blow the moon on an exposure long enough to show up the halo. The plants up front add visual interest.

The only way to expose both parts correctly would be to either make one of those esoteric circular ND filters they use for photographing eclipses, or take two exposures and select the best exposed parts from the two. The problem with the second approach is that, as I'm sure you found out, the moon moves surprisingly quickly...

Very intriguing shot. I like how the leaves seem to be pointing in one direction. I like your other shot with the power lines even better.

Hey! I saw a HUGE bright circle around the moon a few weeks ago. I think it may have been really rainy right after that, but so many things happened, I am not sure if it happened right after that or later. It's such a beautiful pic. I wonder if I could use it in a youtube video I am making. (I am singing a song and part of it is about the moon.)
