Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche Doppelbock

A bottle of Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche from Brauerei Heller in Bamberg, Germany, at Amundsen Bryggeri & Spiseri in Oslo.

Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche is an 8% abv doppelbock brewed with oak smoked malts (unlike the other Schlenkerla beers which are brewed with beech wood smoked malts), hopped with Hallertau and matured for months in the brewery cellar.

The beer poured a clear reddish golden color with a beige head. It had a wonderful aroma of caramel and bacon. The mouthfeel was medium heavy with a velvety smooth carbonation. The flavor started out with a good dose of caramel before the smoke took charge, again with a bacon like smokiness. I also noted a light oaky acidity. The smoke lingered in the aftertaste, with notes of caramel and a light bitterness from the hops.

Overall, this was a very rich beer with lots of smoke, but it was surprisingly smooth and easy to drink. Delicious.
