the guiding spirit

A train track can be such an obvious symbol in photography, with trains coming and going, always indicating travel. I didn't want to fight against that, since that's why I love train tracks so much to begin with...but I did want to add to that and put my own personal feelings into this. For me, train tracks carry people from one place to another. I have always wanted to hop on a train at random and see where it takes me, not because I am unhappy being where I am, but because I love adventures. For me, this picture is about having someone or something else carry you - leaving yourself open to the adventure.

This was shot on a trip to the Mojave desert, on the way back, after deciding not to battle LA traffic and instead wait it out in this small western town. Trains went through here surprisingly frequently, and one nearly ran over my purse that I left by the track...but all was safe, people and objects included, and it was a super fun time :)
