Eastern Tailed-Blue (Cupido comyntas)

Eastern Tailed-Blue (Cupido comyntas) Family: Gossamer-wing Butterflies (Lycaenidae) Subfamily: Blues (Polyommatinae)

This posting goes out with a very special "Thank You" to my Flickr Friend Shawn Wainwright. I posted a photo yesterday of this butterfly with it's wings closed (which is how it sits 90% of the time). Shawn was able to identify the species for me, and then went on to explain that I might catch them opening their wings on sunny day to bask in the sun... Well Shawn was right !! Since the sun was out today, I took a quick trip back out to the field and here is what I found.. So again, "Thank You Shawn".

And by the way if you don't know Shawn, I would recommend taking a peek at his wonderful photostream, and especially his gorgeous shot of this same butterfly.

The butterfly is common across eastern North America, and is found as far south as Central America.
