Red-Spotted Purple Butterfly

Limenitis arthemis - Also known as a Red-spotted Admiral.

We don't see these very often in our area of North Texas, but if we are lucky we catch them as they hatch in the summer. The caterpillars love our cottonwood and white leaf poplar trees. But once they burst out into butterflies they move on.
