HOLMES system (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System)
image above: Detectives learn how to operate the HOLMES system (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System). All statements, messages and follow-up action taken by officers can be typed into the system and retrieved at speed. The computer allows individual words to be extracted from the thousands of messages in the system. Instead of spending hours, or even days, sifting through paperwork a detective looking for a man with an umbrella seen near a murder scene can enter the word umbrella and call up extracts from every statement containing that word on the screen within vital minutes.
