The 12th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment - ‘Bristol's Own'
Undergoing physical training at Ashton Gate. 1914-15. This battalion was established on 4 September 1914 as part of Kitchener's New Army. Recruits had to be unmarried and aged between nineteen and thirty-live. In less than a fortnight. 500 recruits, practically half the battalions full strength, had been enrolled and at once became known as ‘Bristol's Own'.
The initial training of the new recruits took place through the winter of 1914-1 5 and on 21 November 1915 they crossed to France and saw action in the area of the Somme.
