John Ryan's Rime of the Ancient Mariner

This is an original hand-painted still from John Ryan’s short film The Rime of The Ancient Mariner (1966), based on Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem and narrated by Richard Burton.

It is gouache on card with black ink cross-hatching and concealed levers manually controlling movements. Here, the sailors, surrounded by fog and ice, welcome the Albatross. The camera is instructed to pan from left (sailors wave their arms via two levers below) to right (boy feeds the bird which moves via lever above).

The work of Captain Pugwash creator John Ryan is exhibited at Rye Art Gallery in East Sussex until 12 February 2012.
