A Waterman at a Hackney Coach Stand by W H Pyne, 1805

A waterman to a hackney coach stand, WH Pyne, 1805. Around his neck he wears a brass license badge stamped with his number. Similar badges were worn by porters on Bristol docks to prove they were licensed to work. Watermen had to feed and water horses and open doors for passengers.
