• The silly hat
  • Walnuts - the healthy snack option
  • Kit-Kat - for when the healthy option just won't do.
  • Real ink for my real fountain pen. Cartridges are for sissies :P
  • Real fountain pen that takes real ink. I think what I love most about Moleskines is that the paper is of good enough quality to take proper ink.
  • Moleskine with super-secret notes about the book. Open to show the map sketched whilst sitting on a beach (bless holidays!)
  • Trusty iPod connected to trusty speakers. I'm still casting around for decent music-to-write-to - any suggestions? (For this holiday, John Mayer and Imogen Heap were favourites)
  • Wrist-wrest improvised from a folded-up towel. It confused the hell out of housekeeping each day, with the added advantage of keeping the RSI at bay,
  • Print-out of story so far. Reading on the screen is all well and good, but sometimes you just need to be able to flick through 200 A4 pages of 1.5 line spaced tahoma size 12 to get a feel for it.
  • Dinky post-it tabs. Perfect for indexing. Yellow = first half of the story. Green = second half of the story. And I haven't got a fracking clue how to tie the two parts together... Uh, anyone out there a good editor?
  • The Big Notebook containing lists of all character names, short bios, place names, yada yada. Again, I've got it all on computerised lists, but there's something better about a tangible book you can flick through and scribble notes on.
  • Weeping Buddha from Borneo. He always sits on my desk where I can reach out and touch him when needs be. He's the perfect size and shape for rolling in your fingers when staring into space trying to work out a particularly sticky plot-point.
  • Trusty PowerBook - four years old and still going strong.
  • Piece of tubi-grip for when the folded-up towel isn't quite enough.

Have desk, will write

When you go away planning to write, it's reassuring when you get to your hotel to find a decent sized desk with handy power-sockets.

Roll over the photo for notes.

Great set of photos, Cas. Looks like you had a great time, and managed to write lots too.

I did have a lovely time. Didn't get quite as much writing done as I'd hoped for, but I did make a start :)
