This reminds me of the McKinsey Consumer Decision Journey www.mckinseyquarterly.com/The_consumer_decision_journey_2373

Nice the way you have expanded and given it more detail!

Mark, indeed. Based partly on their research as well as my own. It's part of the next book!

Brian, very interesting but I feel like I'm missing something.
The 'sales funnel' (although I prefer the hourglass mediphor) is from the businesses point of view of the sales process. While your diagram feels like it's from the consumer point of view. As a buyer I've never thought of my process as a funnel.
      Please enlighten me! :)

I agree with Ric. Knowing this helps a company to identify the influencers and position the product/service well, this does not indicate the clear flow of leads to sales..

That said, I think the pic really tells a hundred story and is very very valuable to all marketing folks to know, understand and create their own version of the same.. will go a long way in improving the effectiveness of the marketing campaigns..

There will be a follow on graphic internally, but it isn't a funnel...it's far too complex now and involves many disciplines to address the other side.

Thanks, Brian, very useful! Interesting to see the influence loop inside the primary ellipse. For me I visualize it outside the primary ellipse, because I interpret the ellipse as being from the decisionmaker's POV. But maybe that's because I'm a user-centered designer :)
