Old house, Whakaangiangi Road, Awatere, Gisborne, New Zealand

This old abandoned house is well sheltered by trees that were most probably planted at the same time the house was built.

I was told by another resident along the Whakaangiangi Road, that the owner of this property, Wiremu Wanoa, and his whanau have had a dream of protecting a remnant of native bush on this property. The Gisborne Herald reported from a hui in January 2011 that this dream will be able to be fulfilled with the help of philanthropists Bruce and Jesse Pulman. (The fence will cost about $100,000 per kilometer)

.

The plan is to build a 1.8m high predator proof fence around the bush, that will keep out all predators such as rats and mice, cats and dogs, weasels, pigs, deer, goats, rabbits, hedgehogs - All introduced species in New Zealand that have in their own ways contributed to real fears of extinction for many of our native fauna and flora.
