A Nice February hike

Newer Older

Up Mount Si on a beautiful winter day. It was icy for about the last 1.5 miles, I was might glad to have Yak Trax for my boots - although I broke one, and need to find a sturdier replacement.

I have been training for a climb up Rainier in June. Going up Mount Si with a progressively heavier pack is an important part of my training. This hike was with 13 kg (28 pounds). I am working my way up to 25 kg (55 pound) pack. Most of my hikes have been slogging in the rain and mist - today was a great exception.

Good luck on Rainier! Which route? Its a fantastic climb... I honestly never did practice much with carrying weight, I just always went as fast and as hard as I could hike/run and prepared my lungs that way.

Steve Reekie Thanks Steve - we had a nice day. It is a local hike, about 60 km from my house and accessible almost year round. We are lucky to have many nice places to tramp near to Seattle where I live.
Mark Griffith Thanks Mark. Emmons route - I think roughly the same route as you did. Awesome video and photos. I want to have enough energy to do a jump at the summit. As to training - I'm quite a few years older, and mainly a day hiker. My friend who has done Rainier a few times advised me to get in quite a bit of training.

Wow! That is quite the view! Nice shot and good luck with the training. 55lbs is one heavy pack! I went in to the Enchantments with a 35lb pack and that was a choir.
