Light, Shadow and Clouds, Utah

I made this image this morning from the Grand View Overlook in Canyonlands National Park. This is the northern section of the La Sal Mountains just after the sun crested the horizon. I think you're seeing the shadow of the La Sals being cast upon some low clouds but I'm not sure if that or something else is happening. Can anyone tell me what kind of weather/light phenomenon this is?

I'm not presenting the image here as fine art. I'm just fascinated by the crazy light and would love to know what's going on.

Presenting this image as "not fine art" is pretty humble, Bret. I think it's just that ... fine art. The impressive thing is the abstraction from the form in favour of light and mood, that works extremely well here. The way the peak line is mirrored a little further below is pretty awesome ... also I do not have a perfect explanation of how this came to be, I guess it must have something to do with the diffusion of the light in the drops- and particle-filled air. This makes the light go around the bend, I think. Anyway, it's a feast to look at ;)

I've stumbled upon your stream some days ago, because I remembered buying a small print in your gallery in April this year. I came through moab with my wife and two friends and spent enjoying minutes in your gallery. Great work on display there!
Later this day I was extremely lucky with some great light on Dead Horse Point, a clearing storm made it appear very dramatic. Maybe you had the chance to shoot this day, too. It was April 26th.
