Stormy Sunset Over Grand Canyon, Arizona
The Grand Canyon is not an easy place to photograph. It's SO huge and well, grand, that it rarely translates well into a photograph. On this evening, the Gods of Photography and the Gods of Great Light conspired to allow me to create an image that, I feel, does the Big Ditch a bit of justice. This was easily one of the most intense, awe inspiring sunsets I've ever witnessed. That night I would have sworn the apocalypse was under way.
I made this photo from the Grandview Trail a couple years ago using a 2 stop graduated neutral density filter to control the dynamic range. The scene was photographed in RAW and imported to Lightroom 3 for initial editing. I used Nik Software Viveza 2 and Color Efex Pro to add some finishing touches, including the removal of a weird yellow color cast in the blue part of the sky. I then used Nik Sharpener Pro 2 to sharpen for web.
