The Bike Bridge - Work in Progess
Through our Civic Arts Program, the Black Rock Arts Foundation turns our focus on serving Oakland’s youth, offering them a unique opportunity to connect with each other and to their community, to provide substantial creative input to the design and creation of a large scale public work, and to learn new skills in a fun, positive and supportive setting.

The Bike Bridge is a collaboration with the youth of Oakland, California, with qualified artists, and with local partner organizations. The 12 enrolled participants, all young women, begin the program with classes in welding and art-bicycle creation, generously hosted by partner organization, The Crucible. The program culminates in the collaborative creation of a large-scale sculpture, led by acclaimed artist, Michael Christian. The sculpture is scheduled for completion in October, and will be installed in a public location in Oakland.

Check out these photos of the students' works-in-progress. Many thanks the the staff instructors at The Crucible for leading these talented young women in this creative endeavor!
