in the gamble room

Opened in 1867, the V&A's Refreshment Room is richly decorated in majolica tiles. The design is attributed to James Gamble, hence when two further rooms (the Morris and Poynter) were added on either side of the main space it became known as the Gamble Room.

The whole decorative scheme, including the stained glass windows, was designed as a celebration of the joys of food.
