An incredible collection of propaganda!

This is not all propaganda; there are several posters for exhibitions, theatre plays and movies.

However, this is an amazing collection, it's very cool to relive the history of the Soviet Union through these posters.

If at all possible, they should be titled and annotated, if you have the sources? I can help with a few.

Thx, G. I would very much appreciate any information you might have since basically none was provided with the pix (dl'ed in short time from a long-disappeared Russian site).

I know that those beginning with 'Ku' are for Kultura (Culture) and some others are grouped with Kosmos (Space), but otherwise, I have no details. Please enlighten.

Hi bpx, I've added short comments to the first part of the Kultura set. I'll try to provide info for other posters as best I can.

However, for example for the Hr set (Hungary) I don't read the language, so I won't be able to provide any interesting information...

G., thanks once again for your extensive commentaries through the Kultura set... It certainly adds a lot of value to the viewing. Now I just have to figure out how to remove the 'Propaganda' tag from the "Ku_" posters.... Hmmmm, how to remove a tag in batch operations?
Posted ages ago. ( permalink )

OK, done. Kultura posters no longer tagged under 'propaganda'. (Thx flickr gamma!)

Amazing set.

There are several posters (Ku_290-Ku_307) in
Lithuanian that predate introduction of communist
rule in that country, so USSR, Russia
tags do not apply
Posted ages ago. ( permalink )

view profile

opserver says:

"do_" posters all seem to predate Russian
revolution (do-revoliutsionnye ?), therefore
USSR, propaganda tags are incorrect.
Most of them are ads for merchandise,
breweries., etc. Beautiful art-nouveau.

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for the comments and appreciation. I acquired these from a mysterious Russian site (link sadly lost) in November 2005 and thought they would be of interest to the web world at large. But I had no idea just how popular they would be. (I'm still updating tags like crazy.) In particular, a hearty thank you to the Russian translators and historians. Your input is astounding!

Hey Ben, I'm writing up some more comments for the Br_ set. My guess is that it's from the relative "detente" of the Brezhnev era (1970's).

Maybe we'll have all those posters annotated one day :)

bpx says:

Update: new tags, titles

So, (most likely) the two-letter prefixes (with the exception of Ku_ for Kultura and do_ for pre-USSR adverts (?)) designate the Soviet ruler during the respective time period for each poster.

Ku_ pics are now titled Kultura (and removed 'propaganda' tag) and Go_ Gorbachev (and added 'perestroika' and 'Gorbachev' tags). Retitling all of them, however, was becoming rather time-comsuming.

So... I simply tagged the Br_ group with 'Brezhnev', Le_ with 'Lenin', St_ with 'Stalin', etc. To isolate a particular era, simply do a tag search for the respective ruler. As per opserver's advice, I tagged Kultura 290-307 with Lithuanian (and removed ussr-related tags). Btw, which others are also Lithuanian? Carry on comrades, Ben

And thx again, spacelion ;-)

Lots of people have been asking about a quick way to download all of these at once. Well, I think I found it. I haven't tried it yet but judging by the comments, it should work OK (although it might stop at 100 photos):

here's a few more flickr downloaders:
www.leiderman.org/Downloadr/
vikingospub.blogspot.com/2006/05/mass-download-original-p...

and then there's this, a screen saver that downloads:

I think punchy1 is severely frustrated, poor lad. Although it is strange that we adore USSR kitsch, but don't give the same treatment to Nazi propaganda/graphic design.

Purely from a graphic design point of view this is a fascinating collection, sadly some of the most oppressive regimes seem to result in the most beautiful artwork.

I'm speechless! This is fantastic! It's so hard to find a good collection of Russian/Soviet Union/USSR posters from the last century. I've added a few comments here and there to the posters where I know some sort of info (the artist or the year or what the poster reads in English) but it's not much, I'm afraid. Thank you for uploading these! I'm very excited about looking through them all.

An incredible collection. It made me remember that I also had a collection of Soviet posters somewhere. When I found them and compared, there are some the same, but not all mine are in your collection. Mine are in a book (A3 size for each poster), with notes for each poster.

Not sure what the position is about copyright. Or how to photo them. Any advice. I will try and check them against yours and add some captions.

Gueorgui Tcherednitchenko says:

Hi Varske,
If I remember correctly, on Wikipedia it says that works created in the Soviet Union prior to 1973 weren't covered by international copyright conventions, and are thus public domain outside of Russia (ie, on the Internets). However, this is Wikipedia, so it might be wrong.

Now about scanning, don't know what to tell you. A flatbed scanner might break your book, so the best would probably be to photograph each poster individually (if you feel up for it!). The best way would be to get some kind of holder for your camera, or you'll get tired of it pretty quickly. Also, prefer neon (white) lighting to standard incandescent (yellow) lighting.

Good luck and looking forward to seeing them :)

varske says:

G. Thanks for your help. Unfortunately they are in a bound book published by a major publisher after 1973, and from an identified museum in Russia. So the copy right issue is a bit tricky. Also since they are bound in a book, they are hard to scan or photo. I might have to destroy the book.

There are hundreds more posters on the site www.plakaty.ru/posters, but everything is in Russian. It's not difficult to navigate round though.

It seems to me that plakaty.ru is the mysterious source of these posters: at least four of the posters identified as Estonian can be found on plakaty.ru and I think I've seen the pre-revolutionary ones there as well. The only problem with this theory is that the images on plakaty.ru appear to be a lot smaller than the original sizes here.
