Hawaiian Stilt ( Ae'o ) -Endangered Species ( Himantopus mexicanus knudseni)

Taken at Kealia Pond Maui. A National Wildlife Refuge managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service. The population numbers are around 1,200 and has not changed since the 1940's. It is hard to believe that these magnificent birds were once a popular game bird and hunted .Habitat loss also brought the Hamaiian Stilt to the razor's edge of extinction. How wonderful and humbling it felt to be in the presence of this highly endangered bird.
