On Blacksburg Road, hay rows await the bailer. Camera is a Nikon N8008 AF, 1990 vintage, with a 24-50 AF zoom and Tri-X black-and-white film at ISO 400. Processing by Cardinal Camera in Lynchburg, Va. The non-throwaways are minimally enhanced in iPhoto. A rule of the RIAD/DIAR project is that all of the frames be published. Another wrinkle this month was that shooting had to be in B&W. I used to shoot (and process) B&W all the time but I'd forgotten how to shoot it and what was different about it. As I look at the results, I can see that what's of greatest importance with these is tonality much more than hue; contrast much more than saturation. Some things -- simple scenes with few elements, things that don't depend on color -- make better shots than others do. There actually was one winner and there were several good ones in this batch.
