BOSTON (January 25, 2014) - Cardinal Sean presided over an Ecumenical Prayer for the Martyrs, organized by the Community of Sant’egidio & the Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs. This was an unprecedented ecumenical prayer in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which gathers the leaders of Christian traditions from across the Boston area in memory of all those who gave their lives for the Gospel, on Saturday, January 25, 2pm at Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Mission Church), Boston.

 

Other Christian leaders who lead in the prayer were Rev. Jeffrey Brown of Twelfth Baptist Church, Roxbury; Rev. Laura Everett, executive director of the Massachusetts Council of Churches; Rev. Hegoumen Moses of St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church; Metropolitan Methodios of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston and All New England.

 

These are just some of the groups represented at the service:

 

Ethnic Apostolates: Korean, Ugandan, Kenyan, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Nigerian, Chaldean, Italian, Brazilian, Argentinian, French, Haitian, Colombian, Egyptian, Syrian, Iraqi, Indian, and many more.

 

Catholic Sui Iuris Churches and Groups: Maronite, Melkite, Syro-Malabar, Ethiopian/Eritrean/Egyptian Ge'ez-Rite Catholic, Boston College, Focolare, Chemin Neuf, Catholic Alpha, Sisters of St. Joseph, Redemptorists, Assumptionists, Office for Religious Education, many parishes including St. John the Baptist in Peabody, St. Julia in Weston, Blessed Mother Teresa in Dorchester, many more.

 

Orthodox Churches: Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston, Romanian Orthodox, Possibly Ukrainian, Antiochian, and more.

 

Oriental Orthodox Churches: Coptic Orthodox Church including Hegoumen Moussa up to 100 faithful; Armenian Apostolic; Malankara Orthodox Syrians.

 

Mainline Protestant Churches: Mass Council of Churches, plus Presbyterian (driving all the way from Orleans!), UCC, Episcopal, Community of Jesus, United Methodists- From Sudbury!, Salvation Army, others
