Summary: Born in Senegal, Phillis Wheatley was enslaved at the age of seven and purchased by the Wheatley family of Boston. She was encouraged by her owners to read and write and published her first poem at fourteen. This rare first edition copy of her poetry represents two major literary milestones for African-American writers: it is the first published book of poetry and the first by a woman.
