Lehua flower

The Lehua flower grows in Hawaii on the Ohi'a tree. Legend has it that the jealous goddess Pele turned the handsome, young man Ohi'a into a tree when he rejected her affections. When Ohi'a's true love, Lehua, could not bear to live without her beloved, Pele showed mercy and turned Lehua into the beautiful red flower that grows on the Ohi'a tree.

This photo was taken near the Kilauea Crater on the Big Island of Hawaii.
