Mary's Shoppe. Takoradi, Ghana, West Africa
The story: I lived in Takoradi for most of 2007. I was in Ghana working as a journalism trainer for the Canadian NGO Journalists for Human Rights (JHR.ca). In my job I worked alongside the journalists at SKYY Television and Radio -- helping them tell their own stories.
My home was about a kilometre from the station, and my walk down a dirt road took me past a number of small shops. I would always stop in to visit Mary (above) on my way home. She would ask about my day and what I thought of Ghana. And I would buy something for dinner.
She had a robust laugh and no matter how tough a day it had been, she made me glad that I was there. I really miss the friendliness of Ghanians. It was the best year ever.
