"Ocean Piece" by Jorge Martins
Ocean Piece, by Portuguese artist Jorge Martins with poetry by American Poet, Walt Whitman and Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa, is located at Archives-Navy Memorial station on the Green and Yellow Lines in the District of Columbia. The 32-ton wave-shaped, Viana green marble wall sculpture is a gift to the Nation's Capital from the Lisbon Subway. The ten-foot-high, sixty-foot-long sculpture is flanked by two engraved poems; Prayer of Columbus, by Whitman and Occident, by Pessoa. Ocean Piece was created by the artist to evoke notions of the constant ebb and flow of life.
With the Navy Memorial above, the notions it was meant to evoke (constant ebb and flow of life) as well as so much of Walt Witman's life having been spent in/on the neighborhood streets this art work is well situated to reflect the station location.
