---Dedicated in 1912 and paid for by the Knights of Columbus organization

 

---This monument not only celebrates the discovery of the America’s but is also a fitting tribute to the city’s namesake….Columbia, which is the feminized version of Columbus’s name

 

---The statue is part of a much larger fountain that has the following addtl carvings on it including:

A native American

An elderly European

The “figure of Discovery” on the prow of a ship

And a globe

 

---On the back of the statue, you will see the medallions of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain who were the sponsors of Columbus’s voyage to the Americas in 1492.

 

---On Columbus Day each year, Italian, Spanish and American dignitaries gather to lay tributes at its base.
