12th U.S.C.H.A. (Reactivated)

The 12th US Colored Heavy Artillery - Reactivated.

Based at Camp Nelson, KY; the group has come to the former Lincoln Institute in Simpsonville this day for the unveiling of a new KY roadside historical marker detailing a Civil War massacre which occurred here in Shelby County in 1865.

In the attack, men of the 5th US Colored Cavalry were surprised by a band of Confederate guerrillas while driving cattle to a railhead near Louisville. More than 20 were killed and another 20 wounded. At least four troopers later died of their wounds. The 5th USCC was based at Camp Nelson, Kentucky. Camp Nelson provided the Union Army with over 10,000 African-American soldiers, making it the third largest recruiting and training depot for African-Americans in the nation.
