When you first arrive in a village it takes quite some time before the residents gain a trust in you . Who are you , why are you here ? All these thoughts go through the minds of people who have lived most of their lives in relative isolation . I have a secret weapon in gaining their trust , my wife . DeeDee has a hide nothing personality and greets kings and beggars with the same no question is a bad one attitude . We had been in this village wandering for about an hour , people peeked out of windows and from around corners wanting a view of us but not wanting to be seen as interested . It was beginning to feel like we were unwelcome when DeeDee found a group of children sitting underneath the shade of a tree with a woman a teacher . In she went , right to the middle of the circle using her best sign language to say hello and started with her name . Before long she had the entire class repeating DeeDee . Suddenly doors began opening , first the elders were sent to check us out and one by one they appeared . smiles and laughter ensued as we tried to communicate . Yes , they most likely understood very little , but we were interesting and we could be trusted .
