The Cross in the Woods

One of about 120 national Catholic shrines in the United States, this is the largest crucifix in the world. The cross stands about 55-feet tall and the figure of Christ is 31-feet tall. The Cross in the Woods is located at 7078 M-68, Indian River, Michigan, USA (i.e., on the north side of M-68, 300 feet west of the traffic light at Old U.S. 27). Marshall Fredericks personally cast the bronze figure of Christ in Norway. The 7-ton figure was transported across the Atlantic and down the St. Lawrence River to Detroit, Michigan. From there it was moved 250 miles to Indian River, in northern Michigan, on a huge flatbed trailer. With the completion of I-75 to northern Michigan, exit 310 has made access to the shrine easy for visitors from around the world. I am happy to say that this photo was added to the "Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Musuem" gallery on "The Cross in the Woods."
