Green_zircon_Burma_is

Green zircon from Burma (1.36 carats; about 5mm) ZrSiO_4 with iron, hafnium, thorium and uranium. It is the uranium that is responsible for the absorption lines in the optical spectrum. The spectrum was photographed in two exposures with a 'Beck Reading Diffraction Spectroscope' coupled to a Sony DSC-F717. The stone is radioactive, giving 60 counts/min (= 2.7 times the background count) when placed against my Geiger-counter tube.
