Quadrillium

A picture taken earlier this year on top of Grandfather Mountain. This Painted Trillium is showing an unusual genetic mutation causing it to have four instead of three petals. The plants reportedly grow back like this every year in that particular spot, but this is the first time I saw it myself. While a rare occurrence, it is apparently not unheard of in this plant species and even has its own name:

Trillium undulatum forma polymerum
